Basic Table Manners For Restaurants

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Proper table etiquette in restaurants is just as important as it is at Sunday night dinner. The problem is that many people don’t realize this and if they do choose to throw everything they know of good manners straight out the window when entering the establishment. This is a shame since poor manners reflect directly upon you, your dinner party, and even your country if you are a tourist. Most Canadians understand this so for those that may be visiting or for those that may have forgotten the following is a quick review of what everyone should already know.

Canadians are no different when it comes to the desire of proper dining etiquette. They enjoy, like all of us, a nice meal free from vulgarity and insult. A good rule of thumb at any dinner situation is to act as you would if your mother was sitting right next to you. Would she allow you to keep your elbows on the table? Probably not so do not keep them there. Just because you are out in public depending on someone else to cook and serve for you does not give you license to be rude if anything it should redouble your desire to behave properly.

Some of the basic etiquette are also the ones that take the most common sense. Do not talk with your mouth full, just do not it is incredibly rude and disgusting and chances are you are going to spoil someone’s appetite. If you need something from a server, swallow that bite and politely call them over. Do not snap your fingers instead softly call the server over.

That napkin is there for a purpose so use it. You may not be accustomed to cloth napkins so here are some points to remember. If it is a smaller size napkin keep it unfolded and on your lap. Larger napkins are usually folded in half but they are still kept in your lap. Use the napkin to dab at the corner of your mouth and if need be, other areas of your face. Do not use it as a tissue or to clean up spills.

While children will never be turned away from eateries, you will still want to make sure that they are well behaved and kept in check. Well behaved children are always a delight but ones that insist on running around, throwing food, or talking out of turn will certainly turn a good meal sour. If you do not allow you child to do something at the house then why let them do it out in public?

While tipping can be tricky there are a few universally agreed upon rules that you can follow. If the host is picking up the bill it is generally understood that he is going to take care of the tip as well. You should never leave anything extra even if you do not find the amount fair; this is just insulting to your host. Gratuity is usually added to large groups but feel free to add more if the service was beyond par. Fifteen to twenty percent of the bill is considered an average tip. If everyone is responsible for their own bill then they are also responsible for their own tips. Do not tip less then the smallest tip amount or much more then the largest amount.

Canadians in particular follow some etiquette that is just outdated in the United States of course other countries may still follow these rules. Pass to the right when in a family style setting. Other examples include serving the women first and then the men and the host will be the one making the toasts. Wait until everyone is served before eating is another great point of etiquette. Wine is usually served at dinners so be mindful of how you drink. Sip the wine, you certainly will not want to get drunk at a formal dinner.

Etiquette and manners are important to our modern society. Without which we will possibly cause the collapse of the civilized world. Proper behavior in restaurants is especially important and reflects well on you and those around you. Tourists are often the ones that forget their manners when visiting different countries. You may see out of town visitors and think to yourself that they are rude and vulgar but maybe they are just not aware of local customs. For example Canadians may find it unusual that Americans want their plates cleared away as their done instead of waiting until the end of the meal. So if you travel be aware of rituals, customs, and other points of manner that you may not be used to. Restaurants are a great place to go and relax for lunch or an evening meal but do not do it with some amount of decency and manners.

There are a variety of places that you can go to purchas your meal, you can choose to eat at home with your family and pets and pick up your food at a grocery store, or you can choose to eat out at a restaurant or fast food place.

Good Restaurants Are A Mainstay For A Complex Economy

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

The economy is in the dumps. It seems that is all we hear or read about these days. It jumps out at us while we watch television and there when we turn on the radio in the car and it is in our face when we boot up to check e-mail. About the only thing we can afford to do to entertain the family is go out to restaurants. Even in a bad economy, we will still have to wait if we go to a good one.

When money is tight, families as well as businesses perform a thorough review of expenses, looking for the low hanging fruit that can be eliminated with the least impact on our lifestyles. This enduring recession has had a dramatic affect on nearly very portion of the leisure and daily activities engaged in by average American families. Seemingly sacrosanct events like television newspapers and magazines have been hard hit with lost or reduced subscriptions. But eventually, every family will find a way to save enough for some relaxing family time. With travel and theme parks entering the too expensive arena, going out for dinner becomes a palatable and enjoyable alternative.

But no matter how grim things are, families have to eat and so it is a natural transition to melding dinner and entertainment into a single event. Nearly every family has a favorite place where they might to go out and eat. Using the mail is rewarding way to entertain everyone is frugal yet gets the family out of the house. Moms get a break and Dads can feel good about the price.

With the number of different facilities catering to every individual cuisine preference, it is a matter of getting everyone to decide on what kind of food they want. Once that is settled, any reputable place will be able to satisfy everyone. Of course, there are always those times when everyone wants something different, and those times are exacerbated by less frequent opportunities. That is why they invented the buffet dinner.

There is also the matter of ambiance; fast food places do not always satisfy the need for a dining experience. This is the time to do a little homework and perhaps find a way to gain some advantage from this otherwise dismal economy. Just like families, businesses are suffering from the less frequent dining out frugality that has swept the nation. In response, there are some clever and rewarding ways businesses are vying for the reduced spending dollar. Eateries are offering manager specials, package dinner experiences and even buy one get one free coupons to entice patronage.

Business trips, while severely limited in number during this austerity, still exist and create a need for the businessman to eat out. Hotel fare may be reasonable, but one does not usually conduct business in the hotel, so finding a place that is palatable and affordable is a key part of every trip. The easiest way is to find a place in the business location that is a franchise form a place you know at home. This allows more time to focus on the business and less on what and where to eat.

If one must get to the business location via plane, the whole issue of eating becomes more important. Once we could be reasonably sure we would have adequate food, if not our personal favorite, on longer flights. Today we are grateful for the opportunity to buy a snack on the plane, or we bring something with us, adding to the complex nature of cramming ourselves and our belongings into our allotted space.

Taking the family or going out oneself for business, restaurants will always serve an important need in our lives. We often find one or two places the whole family can enjoy; we are rewarded by their good business, they are rewarded with our patronage. This symbiotic relationship develops in good times, and perseveres through the difficult times. It is a testament to the value of solid business principles that the family feels comfortable patronizing restaurants as a means of entertainment and a way to support the economy.

There are a variety of places that you can go to purchas your meal, you can choose to eat at home with your family and pets and pick up your food at a grocery store, or you can choose to eat out at a restaurant or fast food place.

Dining Guides And Restaurants The Are Worth Visiting

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

So you are hungry and you want to go out to eat. If you are adventurous you may want to try a new place and experience. Canadians dine out every day for a variety of reasons and the dining guides available online help them decide where they are going. If you love going out to restaurants and trying new ones these ratings can come in handy.

When a previous customer goes online they can review their dining experience and rate a restaurant. This star system goes from a one to a five in most cases. A five star rating can be the top honor for a restaurant and a one start can be the lowest. All of the ratings for one restaurant are combined for their overall score online.

You can use this type of rating system to help you make a dining decision. And if you write a review after have a dining experience then others will use your review. You may choose to pass on a restaurant if it has a poor rating and review. On the flip side you may choose to venture out and try something new if the experience was great for someone else.

In most cases a person will give a good or bad rating for three main categories. These are the quality of the food, customer service quality and how clean the restaurant is. Most ratings you see will include these three items. One of the three categories can lower a five star rating to a lower score just because of one factor being lower than the other. The sad part is you could be a great restaurant with a poor host staff and your business could be suffering.

Other reasons a company rating can be high or low is outlining factors such as the other customers in the restaurant. If there was a rude customer or a crying baby, for example, the establishment may get a lower rating just because the customer rating the place did not enjoy the ambiance. Other factors can include the lighting. If the lighting is too stark it can irritate a customer. The same is true for ambient lighting. It can be made to enhance a mood but if a customer cannot see anything it can be frustrating.

Reading the reviews along with a low rating will tell you why the customer felt strongly about leaving a remark. You can expect that not everyone will love a restaurant but you can get a strong gage of how an establishment is doing. You can look at everyone as a critic and make your own decision and even become a reviewer yourself and give your best and worst comments online for Canadian restaurants.

To find these ratings check the dining guides in the town you are in. If you are in Victoria, for example, hungry for French food simply search French food Victoria BC in your search engine. A list will come up with a dining guide. Choose the guides and not the individual site of restaurants to read the reviews.

Get fed and experience a new restaurant in Canada by using the convenient rating system and reviews online. Here restaurants will be listed that you are interested in visiting. These ratings can be useful. Pay it forward and write a review yourself to help someone else.

There are a variety of places that you can go to purchas your meal, you can choose to eat at home with your family and pets and pick up your food at a grocery store, or you can choose to eat out at a restaurant or fast food place.

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Irish cuisine probably doesn’t have the most glorious reputation throughout the world. Thankfully with the advent of cheap air travel many visitors have discovered that there is more to Irish menus than just stews and potato based dishes.

But nowadays, Doolin hotels, pubs and restaurant are raising the standard of dining for the entire region.

For those who enjoy fine dining in historic buildings with sea views then the Ballinalacken Castle just outside of town will probably be a highlight of any visit to Ireland. This 15th century castle has its own hotel restaurant with views across the sea to the larger town of Galway. The menu makes the best use of prawns, scallops and salmon from the Atlantic in classic French cuisine dishes. Carnivores will be happy to hear that the menu also provides exceptional lamb and organic beef dishes.

Family groups in search of a no-fuss option will find the Aran View House Hotel restaurant a pleasing option. Diners can choose from the formal a la carte menu in the main dining room, the standard menu or the bar menu in the hotel bar. The style of good suits the country house dcor and is more traditionally Irish with stews, roasts and seafood options throughout.

A trip to Doolin would not be complete though without experiencing an Irish music session in one of the town’s bars. McGann’s and O’Connor’s pubs both provide bar menus which, while not at the ‘gastro-pub’ level, are full of wholesome Irish dishes with chowders and stews being popular choices throughout the day.

So you see, the variety of dining options in this Irish village can prove to be a welcome surprise for exhausted visitors following the traditional tourist trail along the west coast of Ireland and goes to prove Ireland’s burgeoning gastronomic skills are not merely limited to the capital and larger towns.
