There are basically two types of allergens, which are the things that cause allergies. There are those that you are allergic to on touch and those that you are allergic to to eat. There are also things, like dust, that you are allergic to to inhale, but that is actually touch as well.

It can get very difficult to discover the cause of an allergy, particularly a food allergy, because they can be lethal. If you are allergic to touching something, you may test a couple of things on your own and maybe you will discover the culprit, but if you consume a foodstuff to which you are allergic, you could die.

Because food allergies could be so perilous, it is best to have them taken care of by a medical professional. if you are not able to do that straight away, it is best to avoid any substances that you suspect may be causing the trouble.

There are common culprits for being allergens particularly with younger people, who are more prone to allergies than adults. Remember that not all allergies manifest themselves in the same way and even if two people have an allergy to the same substance, the reaction may not be the same.

Here is a list of the most prevalent factors for food allergies:

Milk is a very widespread cause of allergies in young people and babies. Cow’s milk is the foremost culprit here and goats’ milk or soya milk are frequently used as substitutes. This is not the same as being lactose intollerant.

Eggs can become the cause of two allergies, namely the white (albumen) and or the yolk. Again, these allergies are more frequent in babies and children than in adults.

Peanuts cause allergies that range from mild to fatal in both children and adults. In the worst cases the airways swell up and block the passage of air resulting in asphyxiation.

Real nuts from trees can also cause allergies, but more often in children than in adults.

Fish allergens usually have an effect on children, but it is a strange one, because the allergens may affect people sitting near someone else eating fish.

Shellfish allergies may be similar to fish allergies, but if you are allergic to fish you are not necessarily allergic to shellfish and vice versa.

Soya is frequently used as a replacement for meat and milk, but it is an allergen to some individuals. People who are allergic to soya or soy have to be wary if eating Asian or vegetarian food.

Wheat may be an allergy causing most often respiratory issues. This is another one to be very cautious with because we use wheat in so many foods in the West.

These eight allergens are responsible for about 90% of all allergies in the USA, but peoples are not the same in every country. The top eight allergies in China may be different, but the eight above are usually in the top ten in most countries.

Lifestyle changes are the hardest ones to achieve and one of the biggest lifestyle alterations that anyone can make voluntarily is to become a vegetarian. Frequently individuals find it easier to be part of a support group when attempting lifestyle alterations; think of Alcoholics Anonymous, Weight Watchers or giving up smoking. Joining a support group can help the novice vegetarian too.

The advantages of being a member of such a support group are many, but some of them are encouragement, advice and friendship. You may not need the friendship, but you might like to socialize with other vegetarians so that you can see how they deal with eating out and basically simply mixing into a society designed by and for meat-eaters.

However, whether you propose giving up your old friends or not, you may find yourself gravitating away from them after a while quite naturally. Remember the old expression: ‘Birds of a feather flock together’? This is fairly standard.

You will have concerns substituting something else for meat; you will be worried that your diet is lacking in some nutrient; you will start asking yourself which restaurants serve truly vegetarian food and lots more.

Your newly discovered support group friends will be a immense source of encouragement and advice in this sphere. You might not like the concept of a ‘vegetarian support group’, yet you could just as easily join a vegetarian dining club or vegetarian cookery class, the impact will be the same – you will learn and you will create new friends.

If you have difficulty locating such a group by the standard ways of your local Yellow Pages and an Internet search, try going to the local community centre, where there may be yoga classes – a few of the attendees will be vegetarians that you can ask. Or go to you local health food shop and ask there Similarly you could ask at a martial arts club or a Hindu Indian restaurant. If all else fails, you could start your own club.

If you organize your own club, find a supportive bar or restaurant that will prepare your meal suggestions for that night at a reasonable price. After a time, I am sure you could build up a lovely little club of twenty individuals and the landlord might let you have your own room to dine in once a month like the Masons.

If you think that this is too much in the early days, you could just set up a blog. A blog is an interactive web site, where you and others can post relevant information. If you keep the name of the blog relevant to your town and vegetarianism, you should find that other people looking as you once did will find you, whereas you discovered no one. Once you have built up a group of local, on line vegetarian sympathizers, you could suggest meeting once a month in the flesh and take the dining notion from there. An advertisement in the local paper would help as well.
